Updating
August 6th, 2009
by Derek BaileyI decided to update my site since i haven't touched it since December and now I have some free time to spend. I also have to switch over to HTML 5.0 since XHTML 1.0 is going out of business to say the lease.
Hopefully that transition shouldn't be too hard to implement. This is a picture of my new place. I just moved up to Madison to start graduate school in chemistry and my roommate Joshua "Kenneth" Carr found this place. It's a second story
2 bedroom apartment that was recently updated. Everything is new in the place and is a lot better than my old place. Please check out the other pictures to see more of my apartment.
Learning mySQL
December 16th, 2008
by Derek BaileyI am teaching myself the mySQL database system in order to program my own blog/website using databases. I will soon be adding the feature to comment on my blog and other interesting stuff, as soon as I learn how to code for them and implement them efficently.

In brief, you had to match three NFL team names to win a baseball cap with that team's logo on it. That got me thinking, what is the probablity of selecting X number of caps and winning? I doesn't matter about the team, just the probablity of winning any team's cap. The more I thought about this the harder the problem became.
For simplicity sake, lets assume there are just 30 NFL teams and you had an ulimited number of caps... read more.

December 13th, 2008
by Derek BaileyIn perparing my own curriculum vitæ (CV) for my applications to graduate schools, I performed some searches of other people's CVs to understand the basic layout. I noticed that a lot of people use the program LaTeX to produce their cv and I thought it would be wise to do the same. I have prepared documents in LaTeX before but I had to relearn most of it. I found a lot of useful templates online and choose this one by Jason Blevins to modify. Here is a the current copy of my CV in pdf and its source code as a tex file.

December 13th, 2008
by Derek BaileyI decided to teach myself web programming again. After teaching myself Java this past six months, XHTML and CSS are relatively easy to pick up and learn. I believe in simplicity of design with easy functionality.
